WHAT IT IS

The Emerald Tablet of Hermes is the registry of sacred texts by Hermes Trismegistus. Hermes is the Greek name for the Egyptian god or agency, Thoth, thought by many to have been the same person. Once these texts are decoded, full awakening and ascension become evident. Mystic polymath, Judy Kennedy aka waywardmuse, put these words to music and into four beautiful artistic designs. These images are unparalleled in color, detail, and elegance. Still, no imagery can do justice to the depth of meaning buried in these words, yet that does not lessen their power.

THE MUSIC

The year was 1981

and I was a graduate student at North Texas State University working toward’s a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies: Music, Psychology, and Philosophy. Beforehand my focus was music composition and therapy. I decided to put this legendary text I had been taught to memorize and recite every day by a modern day mystery school to music. The following is what came through.

jIt is still in very rough draft form, and I invite anyone who feels so moved, to come forward and set it to new orchestration in order to give it the weight and power already so evident that it deserves. If I’d had synths available back then, I’m sure they would have featured prominently in the score, but I didn’t. I just had me, a baby grand piano, pencil and paper. I did it the old fashioned way like Beethoven drawing note per note, and testing the harmonies on the piano keyboard with the aid of a cassette taperecorder. It was the pre-digital age. Fast Forward to 2023. I hired a lovely soul named Lamija from Bosnia-Herzegovina to digitize it so I could hear for the first time what is really sounded like. She and her husband did the four voices the best they could over digitized instruments. On first hearing, I wrote to her:

So dear listener, please keep in mind it is not finished. As beautiful as it is, I hear certain changes that need to be made to fill it out and make it match my inner ear. Plus we need a real vocal quartet. Anyone interested in becoming the producer of this project, please contact me, and we’ll go from there. Thank you.

Note: A copy of this music sits in the library of Builders of the Adytum in Los Angeles, California. I delivered it to them personally in 1990. Since it was at their instruction to study and memorize this sacred text, you’d think they would have shown more interest in it. As far as I know, it still sits there today with my book in some dark, dusty corner, if it sits there at all. I might be “a rose born to blush unseen, wasting its sweetness on the desert air,”* but I’ll damned if this music is!

AN INVITATION

WANTED:

Collaborator and/or producer to gather four human voices and assorted instrumentalists for the purpose of creating a version of this music with new orchestration and musical arrangements.

I first offered this opportunity to Billy Carson because he had written a short rap version and an extensive Compendium on the text. I had another reason to write to him anyway, as you can see by the following letter. Sadly, I never received the courtesy of a reply.

I believe Thoth has made other plans. . .
